You must complete a verification of identity check at the start of the settlement process before we can act for you. This is required by law due to AML and CTF regulations. You must produce original and current identification documents. The usual combination is an Australian passport plus an Australian driver’s licence or photo card.
Several other combinations are accepted. There’s a separate set for people who aren’t Australian citizens or residents. If you have changed your name, you also need the marriage certificate or change of name certificate. It must be issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages rather than by a celebrant.
We give you the full list and detailed instructions for your verification of identity at the start of the settlement process, so you don’t need to work it out in advance. Tell us as soon as you can if you cannot produce the usual documents, because there are alternatives and they take longer to arrange.
